‘Being a trustee? I’m giving back to a charity that changed my life’

05 November 2025

Almost 1 million people in the UK volunteer as charity trustees – for all sorts of reasons. As Trustees’ Week 2025 continues, Jamie Bennett explains how a life-changing experience motivated him…

“Becoming a Trustee of Adoption Matters was never part of a grand plan. It grew naturally — from gratitude, connection, and a deep sense of purpose.

I was adopted through Adoption Matters as a child, and the charity has always held a special place in my heart. The love, stability, and opportunity I’ve known throughout my life stem from the dedication of people who believed every child deserves a family and a future. That belief changed my life — and countless others.

When the chance arose to get involved with the organisation that helped shape who I am, I knew it was something I wanted to do. Meeting the team and hearing the stories of families they’ve supported reminded me just how powerful and personal Adoption Matters’ work continues to be.

I began as a Trustee, bringing my lived experience to the board to help guide the charity’s direction and governance. Over time, I had the privilege of becoming Chair of the Board of Trustees — a role that involves leading the board in supporting the Chief Executive and senior team, ensuring strong governance, strategic oversight, and that every decision remains true to our mission and values.

For me, it’s more than a leadership role — it’s a way of giving back to an organisation that gave me everything. Each discussion and decision is driven by the same sense of gratitude and belief that no child’s potential should be limited by circumstance. It’s an honour to help ensure Adoption Matters continues to transform lives, just as it once transformed mine.”
