Trustee recruitment: time to review your policies

11 June 2025

The Charity Commission has updated its guidance ‘Finding and appointing new trustees (CC30)’.

The guidance has been updated to reflect good practice in trustee recruitment and to ensure compliance with legal requirements, including:

  • enhanced due diligence procedures when recruiting trustees and other senior managers;
  • improved recruitment procedures, including conducting skills audits to identify any gaps in skills required by the charity and not represented on the current board of trustees;
  • developing a role description;
  • advertising trustee vacancies using appropriate channels; and
  • ensuring that trustees are given a comprehensive induction and offered ongoing support in their roles.

The updated guidance aligns with the provisions of the current Charity Code of Governance, especially in the area of board diversity and effectiveness.

Charities should review their recruitment policies and procedures to reflect the changes in the guidance and aim to align their practices with the provisions of the Charity Code of Governance to ensure compliance with good practice.
